The Red Sox will option centerfielder Jarren Duran back to Triple-A Worcester to make room for Trevor Story. Ian Browne of MLB.com reported on Friday night that Story was “likely to be activated Saturday.”
Chris Cotillo of MassLive and Julian McWilliams both confirmed that Duran will head back to Polar Park.
Duran finally is headed back to the minors after struggling with the Red Sox the last couple of months. The 26-year-old is hitting .220 with 44 hits, 14 doubles, three triples, three homers, 17 RBIs with a .283 OBP and .648 OPS.
Besides Duran’s struggles at the dish, he’s equally struggled in the field. Duran has -7 defensive runs saved this season. That number ranks seven-lowest among outfielders who’ve played at least 450 innings this season. Needless to say, fans have been eager to see Duran head back to Worcester.
Story has been on the out of the Red Sox lineup since July 12 due to a hand/wrist injury. The 29-year-old has been on a rehab assignment with the Portland Sea Dogs the last few days.
Story went 0-for-1 with a walk, run and RBI sacrifice fly Wednesday. He went 3-for-4 with a homer, RBI single, double and two runs Thursday. He will now be back in the Red Sox lineup for the second game of the series with the Rays.
