Red Sox option infielder Vaughn Grissom to Triple-A Worcester
The Red Sox are going to keep infielder Vaughn Grissom with the WooSox. Boston officially activated Grissom off the injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Worcester.
Grissom, who has been on the injured list with a right hamstring strain, has been on a rehab assignment with the WooSox since July 20. The Red Sox needed to make a roster decision on Grissom, who had reached the 20-day limit of that assignment.
“We’ll talk about it and see where we’re at Thursday with the off day, and we’ll make a decision...,” Alex Cora said Tuesday in Kansas City. “(He could) keep playing ... Where we’re at roster-wise right now, we feel like we’re in a good spot. We know the potential of the player. We know he’s getting close to who he is, which is very important. Whenever we have to make the decision, we’ll make it, understanding he’s still a good player and he’s going to contribute.”
The 23-year-old spent the first 32 games of the regular season on the IL with a left hamstring injury after dealing with ailments in the spring. He then went just 12-for-81 (.148) with one extra-base hit in 23 games before again landing on the IL with a right hamstring strain. Grissom has missed 54 games on this IL stint.
While with the WooSox, Grissom has batted .259/.362/.333/.695 with one homer, three doubles, 10 RBI, six runs, 20 strikeouts, 12 walks, and five stolen bases (22 games).
Grissom was acquired this offseason from the Braves for left-hander starter Chris Sale. Boston had expected him to be their everyday second baseman, but injuries ended up being his 2024 story.
With Grissom remaining in the minors, it allows the Red Sox to stick with their current 26-man roster as they battle for an AL Wild Card spot. It keeps pressure off Cora while trying to find him regular at-bats down the stretch. When roster spots expand on September 1, Grissom could be an option with the Red Sox.
