Red Sox Opening Series pitching matchups with the Yankees
It’s finally here Red Sox fans, after a postponed opening game Thursday, Boston will look to open up the season in a three-game series in New York.
The Red Sox are looking to make a run for the World Series this season. They finished two wins away from last years Fall Classic falling 4-games-to-2 in the ALCS to the Astros.
After a crazy offseason with the MLB lockout, signing of Trevor Story/others, and few trades the Red Sox open the season against the rival New York Yankees.
Nathan Eovaldi and Gerrit Cole Opening Day Preview
Last season, the Sox jumped to an early 7-0 season series record against New York losing their first game July 17th. After a promising series start the Red Sox would only go on to win the regular season series 10-9. The teams would then go on to meet in a win or take all Wild Card game where the Red Sox would then rout Gerrit Cole to win 6-2.
Friday afternoons matchup will provide familiar faces from the Wild Card game with Nathan Eovaldi and Cole on the bump.
Cole who had rough outings last season against the Red Sox is 5-3 all time with a 3.81 ERA and 70 strikeouts. In his last appearance against the Red Sox he went 2IP giving up 4H and 3ER. Eovaldi is 3-4 all time against the Yankees with a 3.64 ERA and 65 strikeouts. Eovaldi’s last appearance was a memorable one going 5.1IP giving up 4H and 1ER.
Nick Pivetta and Luis Severino Pitching Preview
In the second game of the series it will feature Nick Pivetta versus Luis Severino (who only played 4 games all of last season.) Severino has made 14 appearances against the Red Sox going 5-6 with a 3.89 ERA and 80 strikeouts.
In his last outing against the Sox, Severino finished the day with 1.1IP allowing 1H and 1ER in that Wild Card last season. Pivetta against New York has a record of 0-1 as a starter with a 7.0 ERA and 10 striekouts in his three appearances. Pivetta however did go 5.1IP only giving up 3H and 1ER in his last outing of the season against the Yankees.
Tanner Houck closes the series finale from the Bronx
The series finale provides a young promising pitcher in Tanner Houck vs Jordan Montgomery.
In his career, Montgomery has a 1-2 record with a 3.72 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 11 appearances against Boston. Montgomery last went 5.0IP on 7H only allowing 1ER in his last appearacnce.
Houck is coming off a great season against New York having a record of 1-1 with a 1.86 ERA and 20 strikeouts on 5 appearances with a save. His last outing against New York came out of the bullpen in the Wild Card game throwing 1.0 IP giving up 0H and 0ER with 2Ks.
Pitching matchups are set, the sky will be clear and the greatest rivarly of all sports is back for another season. After being forced to wait an extra 24 hours the Red Sox faithful will finally be able to watch the new look Sox in action again.
