Red Sox minor leaguer Noah Song will undergo Tommy John surgery, ending the 2024 season
Red Sox right-handed pitcher Noah Song will undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the entire 2024 season, according to Chris Hatfield of SoxProspects.com.
Song, 26, was once considered one of the top pitching prospects in the Red Sox system, following being drafted in 2019.
After the draft, he spent the summer of 2019 with the Lowell Spinners. Song went into aviation school with the Navy and missed 2020–2022, before being selected by the Phillies in the 2022 Rule 5 draft.
Song made no appearances at the big league level with the Phillies after beginning last season on the injured list due to a low back strain. He made his return to a minor league mound in late June and struggled badly, posting a 7.36 ERA in 11 frames across three levels of the minors before he was designated for assignment in late July.
He was later returned to the Red Sox in 2023 after the Phillies were unable to keep him rostered within the Rule 5 guidelines.
After missing almost four years in baseball, Song no longer offers the same stuff and control as he once did when drafted. This past spring, the righty saw an uptick in his velocity on the mound but will now require season-ending surgery.
Over the span of four minor league levels last season, he tossed 32 2/3 innings in 15 games, posting a 5.23 ERA with 31 strikeouts and 21 walks.
The expectation for Song heading into 2024 was to likely start with the Portland Sea Dogs.
