The Red Sox have entered the final month of the 2023 season and as of right now, top prospect Ceddanne Rafaela is still with the club as they traveled to Kansas City for a weekend series with the Royals.
Rafaela has played two big league games, one at shortstop and one in center field. The 22-year-old is expected to begin working out at second base in workouts, according to skipper Alex Cora.
The Curacao native has some experience at second base while playing in the minors. Rafaela has played 24 games at the position while starting 22. All of his professional second base experience came in rookie ball and with Low and High-A.
Rafaela was promoted to the Red Sox after Wilyer Abreu was placed on the Paternity list prior to the Astros series at Fenway Park.
The top prospect collected his first big league hit during the 13-5 shellacking by the Astros last Monday. He swung at the very first pitch he saw from Astros’ reliever Jose Urquidy and blooped it into right field. was first pitch swinging.
Unfortunately, Rafaela was doubled off first base later on in the inning.
“Amazing, to play my first game at Fenway,” said Rafaela after the game.
“It’s everything I always wanted in my life,” he said. “This is the most beautiful day.”
Monday’s call up to as dream come true for Rafaela. He explained what his promotion meant to his family, including his mother.
“It means a lot,” Rafaela said. “And my mom, I think this is more exciting for her than for me, because before I (was) born, she was a Red Sox fan. So, it’s a very special moment to make my debut with the Red Sox.”
