Red Sox manager Alex Cora provides update on Zack Kelly
Kelly was placed on the 60-day injured list earlier in the week
The Red Sox will be without right-handed reliever Zack Kelly “for a while,” according to manager Alex Cora. The Sox skipper told reporters on Wednesday that Kelly will have elbow surgery, but it is not known if he will miss the remainder of the season.
Kelly will undergo the reattachment of the ulnar nerve in his right elbow, per MassLive’s Chris Cotillo.
Boston placed Kelly on the 60-day injured list on Sunday, in the process the team claimed former Mariners lefty reliever Brennan Bernardino.
Kelly injured his right elbow in a relief appearance against the Rays. During an at-bat against Yandy Díaz, Kelly immediately became emotional and crouched down and placed his hands into his face. He then grabbed at his right elbow.
The 28-year-old had an MRI last Friday, following the results of the MRI, the decision was made to have surgery.
Kelly has dealt with elbow issues in the past. The righty tore his UCL (ulnar collateral ligament) back in spring training in 2020 and underwent surgery that May. He did not have traditional Tommy John surgery, he underwent a similar procedure to the one Trevor Story had back in January.
This season, Kelly allowed three runs in 7 1/3 innings posting a 3.68 ERA in six relief outings.
