Nick Pivetta has had no interest in moving to the Red Sox bullpen. However, manager Alex Cora disagrees with him and the right-hander will be moved to the bullpen.
Following the Red Sox 12-3 blowout win over the Mariners on Wednesday night, Cora told reporters that Pivetta will transition to a multi-inning reliever.
“It’s where we’re at. We’re getting healthy. We have a lot of starters. Just dominate your role. We’ve seen him do it before,” said Cora to reporters.
Pivetta spent all of the game on Wednesday night sitting in the bullpen. He is 3-3 with a 6.30 ERA over 40 innings in eight starts this season.
The righty now shifts to the bullpen and will look to rebuild his value as a future starter in the process. Pivetta has been ineffective on the mound dating back to last July.
In his last 24 starts dating back to July 1 of last season, Pivetta owns a 6.04 ERA while allowing 137 hits in 119 2/3 innings.
The 30-year-old has been vocal about not removed from the rotation. While the Red Sox were on the road playing the Braves, beat reporter Chris Cotillo asked Pivetta if he was auditioning to remain as a starter.
“I don’t really understand what you’re saying but I’m just going to continue to go out and do my job,” Pivetta said. “I’ve started for this team my whole entire career. I’m going to continue to do that. By the end of the year, I’m going to continue to do that, then next year and the year on out.”
The Red Sox will utilize a five man rotation featuring Chris Sale, Corey Kluber, James Paxton, Tanner Houck and Brayan Bello.
