Red Sox make waiver claim, 40-man roster now full
The Red Sox were aggressive before 2023 ended, making two moves, adding Lucas Giolito and Vaughn Grissom. Two days into 2024, the Red Sox are adding another pitcher to the mix.
Boston claimed right-handed pitcher Max Castillo off waivers from the Royals, the club announced. Castillo will be added to the 40-man roster, which is now full.
The club will still need to make a move to clear a spot for Giolito, whose signing is not official yet.
Kansas City designated Castillo for assignment in December to make room for newly signed outfielder Hunter Renfroe.
The 24-year-old has 21 games of major league experience with the Blue Jays and Royals. Castillo owns a 5.43 career ERA while striking out 47 batters in 59 2/3 innings.
Last season, Castillo spent most of the season with Triple-A Omaha, posting a 6-7 record with a 4.58 ERA and 94 strikeouts in 116 innings over 22 appearances, making 21 starts. He also has tossed quality innings during winter ball this year for his native Venezuela. Castillo went 5-0 with a 2.72 ERA in 11 games, 49 2/3 innings pitched.
Entering into the 2023 season, Castillo was ranked as the No. 23 prospect in their system by Baseball America. As of now, Castillo will be invited to spring training and will be starting depth for Triple-A Worcester.
Castillo is the fifth pitcher to be added by the Craig Breslow. He will join Isaiah Campbell, Cooper Criswell, Justin Slaten and Greg Weissert on the 40-man roster.
