Red Sox make two more lower level internal promotions, door opening for Kyle Teel to Triple-A Worcester?
The Red Sox promoted catcher/infielder Drew Ehrhard to Double-A Portland on Monday and catcher Juan Montero to High-A Greenville, per the transaction log.
Ehrhard is more depth for Portland, but he does give the Sea Dogs four catchers on their roster. With the baseball season now entering the month of July, speculation continues to swirl as to when top catching prospect Kyle Teel will finally land with the WooSox.
Following his promotion to the Sea Dogs, Ehrhard was placed on the development list.
This season while playing for the Drive, Ehrhard has been a non-factor, seeing just nine at-bats and is 3-for-9 with two homers and three RBI. The 25-year-old has been on the development list for a good part of the season.
Montero offers depth at Greenville and offensively hitting .207 with one homer, eight RBI, four doubles, one triple, and 16 walks while slashing .362/.304/.666. The 22-year-old was an undrafted free agent back in June 2020, signing for $20,000.
Teel is enjoying a strong offensive season at the plate, slashing .303/.392/.468. with eight homers, 49 RBI, 31 walks, five stolen bases, .859 OPS, .390 BABIP, 144 wRC+, and .390 wOBA.
If Teel is promoted, he would join Tyler Heineman, Nathan Hickey, and Mark Kolozsvary in Worcester. More importantly, he would just be a step away from landing with the Red Sox.
Once in Worcester, Teel will get to work with the veteran Heineman, who pitchers in the WooSox clubhouse has raved over this season with his preparation.
“No pressure, no diamonds,” said Teel to the Boston Globe’s Alex Speier on the laser focus fans will have once he and the Marcelo Mayer and Roman Anthony are in Worcester.
