Red Sox make roster decisions ahead of Opening Day
The Red Sox made some key roster decisions ahead of Opening Day on Thursday, optioning outfielder Jarren Duran to Triple-A Worcester and announcing Raimel Tapia made the team.
Duran and Tapia had been competition in camp for the final bench spot. Tapia’s hot spring earned him the nod on the roster, while Duran will go to Worcester and get regular everyday at-bats.
Boston signed Tapia this offseason to a minor league deal, once he got into camp, he seized the opportunity to make the big league club.
Tapia was one of the Red Sox best hitters this spring, hitting .326 with two homers, five RBIs and a .988 OPS in 17 games.
Duran had a productive spring as well, hitting .333 with one homer, one RBI, a stolen base in 18 at-bats. His time in camp was shorter due to taking part in the World Baseball Classic for Team Mexico.
To make room for Tapia on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox will assign Adalberto Mondesí to the 60-day injured list, per source. Mondesí has missed the entire spring rehabbing from ACL surgery.
Chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom has maintained that there is no-timetable for the return of Mondedsí. He reiterated that on Tuesday to Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald.
The 27-year-old infielder will continue to rehab and will likely start playing in rehab games later in April, which would align him to be ready for min-May.
