Red Sox make multiple trades on Monday
Boston adds a new catcher while trading away fan favorite in Christian Vazquez
It’s no surprise the Boston Red Sox were going to be a team everyone would turn their eye to during this year’s trade deadline. Chaim Bloom alluded to it last week. The plan was to come into this deadline ready to “buy and sell” leaving many fans curious as to how the club would approach the deadline.
A few hours prior to the Red Sox taking on the Astros Monday night, Bloom traded Christian Vasquez across the diamond to the Houston Astros.
The move really came as no surprise to some. As we all know Bloom loves building his farm system as the Sox landed two prospects for Vasquez. Boston acquires No. 12 in their system Enmanuel Valdez and No. 21 Wilyer Abreu.
With the Sox moving Vasquez this would lead to the next question, what will happen with the catching position for the rest of the season?
The Sox were involved in another trade today that could be their answer. Moments after dealing Vasquez, Boston acquired White Sox backstop Reese McGuire for left-handed hurler Jake Diekman.
McGuire this season is hitting .225 with an OPS of .546 and only throwing out 31% of base runners.
While Mcguire looks like he may not be the best replacement for Vazquez, he’s under team control through 2025. The team currently has four different options behind the dish in Mcguire, Ronaldo Hernandez, Connor Wong, and Kevin Plawecki. The current Sox backup catcher is a free agent after the season.
With Plawecki’s offensive struggles, we could be seeing Hernandez and Wong more depending on this team’s fate at the end of August looking for that second guy.
