Red Sox make multiple roster moves, including designating infielder acquired from the Mets for assignment
The Red Sox were busy following their 4-2 loss to the Braves on Tuesday night. The team will activate right-handed pitcher Nick Pivetta off the injured list and option righty Naoyuki Uwasawa to Triple-A Worcester, per MassLive’s Chris Cotillo.
Pivetta has been on the injured list since April 9 with a right flexor strain in his pitching elbow. He missed the last six weeks but will return to face former teammate Chris Sale in the series finale.
The righty made one rehab start for the WooSox, where he gave up four earned runs off three hits while walking four and striking out five batters.
Uwasawa pitched twice for the Red Sox, four innings in total, giving up one run and posting a 2.25 ERA. Boston was using him as a long reliever; presumably he will be placed back into the WooSox rotation.
Romy Gonzalez will be activated off the injured list, with infielder Zack Short getting designated for assignment, per the Boston Globe’s Julian McWilliams. Gonzalez, who had been on the IL since April 11 with a wrist sprain, was in the clubhouse in Atlanta. He played three rehab games for the WooSox—two games at second base and one as the designated hitter.
Short’s time with the club was short, playing two games where he went 0-for-7 with four strikeouts. He is out of minor league options and will need to clear waivers to stay with the organization.
With Short the odd man out, David Hamilton remains on the roster. He has made just one start in the last 10 games. He provides tremendous speed off the bench, but his bat hasn’t translated this season, and defensively, he’s struggled.
