Red Sox make a flurry of roster moves recalling two players from the WooSox, place two on the IL
The Red Sox made a flurry of roster moves on Sunday morning, ahead of the series finale with the Tigers at Fenway Park.
Boston recalled Bobby Dalbec and selected the contract of Jamie Westbrook from the WooSox. They also placed Vaughn Grissom (right hamstring strain) and Romy Gonzalez (left hamstring strain) on the 10-day injured list.
The Red Sox also transferred right-handed pitcher Garrett Whitlock to the 60-day injured list to make room for Westbrook on the 40-man roster.
Westbrook, 28, makes the bigs for the first time in his career. This season, while with the WooSox, he batted .267 with five homers, 13 doubles, 25 runs, and 29 RBI in 49 games this season. He has started games at first base, second base, third base, right field, and DH.
Westbrook has appeared in 1,159 minor league games.
Dalbec rejoins the Red Sox for the third time this season. He went 7-for-53 (.132) with two doubles, four walks, and 28 strikeouts.
Grissom injured his hamstring in the second inning of the Red Sox's 6-3 win over the Tigers on Saturday, trying to leg out a single. Boston places him on the IL for the second time this season. He missed the first 32 games with a hamstring injury to his left leg.
"I feel like I was just seeing light at the end of the tunnel. So it sucks,” Grissom said.
Gonzalez was 9-for-35 (.257) with a double and triple in 17 games. It’s unclear when he injured his hamstring; he was unavailable to play the infield on Saturday, prompting Cora to use Connor Wong at second base.
Whitlock moves to the 60-day IL after he underwent an internal-brace procedure on his right elbow on Thursday. He had gone 1-0 with a 1.96 ERA and 1.14 WHIP with 17 strikeouts and seven walks in 18 1/3 innings over four starts.
