Red Sox lose reliever Jake Reed to the Dodgers (waivers)
The Red Sox lost reliever Jake Reed to the Dodgers, via waivers on Friday. Reed was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on Tuesday in order to make room for the prospects added to the 40-man roster.
The veteran reliever was initially acquired by the Red Sox as a wavier claim in October.
The right-handed hurler posted a 7.02 ERA and 5.09 FIP with 13 strikeouts to eight walks over 18 relief appearances (16 2/3 innings) for the Mets, Dodgers, and Orioles this past season.
Reed is a journeyman reliever who is known for his different unorthodox delivery when on the mound. The Arizona native throws a sinker and slider while mixing in an occasional four-seam fastball and changeup. His sinker sits 87–88 mph and tops out around 90 mph. According to FanGraphs, his low arm slot when throwing his sinker, the ball gets a “ton of sink.”
The former fifth-round draft pick of the Twins will return back to the Dodgers. He posted a 1.93 ERA in five games for Los Angeles, including recording his first major league save on August 30 in New York against the Mets, his former team.
Reed will provide depth for Los Angeles bullpen, providing he is not designated for assignment again this offseason.
