Red Sox interested in top Mets prospect?
Will Boston trade designated hitter J.D. Martinez to the Mets?
It’s becoming increasingly likely that the Red Sox are going to trade some of their veteran players. One name that has been floated on the trade market has been designated hitter J.D. Martinez.
Should the Red Sox elect to trade Martinez, the New York Mets would be an ideal dance partner. This past weekend, the Mets sent scouts to Fenway Park to watch some of the Red Sox potential trade pieces.
Boston has been linked heavily to New York’s No. 4 prospect infield Mark Vientos.
“The Red Sox have expressed interest in Mark Vientos in the past, the Mets prospect,” Andy Martino said on SNY. “They already know him and like him. In fact, there was a Vientos-for-Vazquez trade that almost happened a few years ago. They’ve been on him for a long time and they have also liked Dom Smith at times.”
Vientos has spent the entire season in Triple-A for Mets. He’s hitting .261 average with 18 homers, 53 RBIs and an .852 OPS in 73 games. The top prospect is consider to being close to major league ready.
Vientos is an infielder by trade having played first base, third base and shortstop. However Vientos is a better hitter than fielder and projects long term as a designated hitter.
Martino also suggested that the Sox could expand upon the Martinez deal and include catcher Christian Vazquez. The Mets are looking for a catcher at the deadline and have been linked to Vazquez in the past.
Would a potential trade package of Smith, Vientos and catcher Tomás Nido be enticing enough for the Red Sox? Nido would be able to fill the void left by Vazquez and is controllable for the next few seasons.
Vientos’ bat is intriguing and the young controllable player brings power potential to Fenway. With the trade deadline rapidly approaching, the Red Sox have pieces to move.
