Red Sox injury updates: Tyler O’Neill ‘should be fine’, Masataka Yoshida, Triston Casas ‘feeling great’
The Red Sox announced outfielder Tyler O’Neill was placed on the injured list with right knee inflammation on Wednesday, retroactive to May 26.
O’Neill had been dealing with a sore knee since he was removed from Saturday’s game against the Brewers at Fenway Park.
The 28-year-old told reporters during the week that he had been dealing with this issue “for a little while.”
“I’ve been grinding through it for a little bit,” O’Neill said. “Felt it more so on that last swing that I took, kind of coming out of the box. Feel like my cleat got caught or something in the batter’s box there. So it didn’t feel too good.”
While making his weekly appearance on WEEI’s “Jones & Mego With Arcand” on Thursday, Alex Cora provided an update on his injured slugger.
“He’s day-to-day. He should be fine,” Cora said. The Red Sox skipper added there was “no structural damage” shown on O’Neill’s imaging.
Over the course of the month of May, O’Neill has been cold at the plate, batting .151 and striking out 36 times.
DH Masataka Yoshida to begin swinging
Cora told reporters before the series opener versus the Tigers at Fenway Park that Yoshida has started to hit off the tee. In addition, the Japanese star is trying to find a thumb guard to help with any discomfort when he swings the bat.
Yoshida has been on the injured list since May 1, retroactive to April 29, with a left thumb strain.
Triston Casas is ‘feeling great’
Casas has been on the injured list since April 20 due to torn cartilage in his left rib cage and is eligible to come off the 60-day IL on June 21.
The slugger is seeing a doctor on Thursday and hopes, following the appointment, that he can be cleared to start swinging a bat.
Casas has been doing other baseball activities, including fielding and throwing. "He's progressing fast," Cora said. "So hopefully we can add stuff to what he's doing, but he's feeling great.”
