Red Sox infielder Yu Chang elects free agency
Red Sox infielder Yu Chang has elected to become a free agent.
The 28-year-old played 39 games for the Red Sox this season, batting .162 with two doubles, six homers and 18 RBI. He played 33 games at shortstop, four games at second base, two at first base and one at third base.
Chang missed time this season after undergoing hamate surgery on his left hand. His recovery wasn’t smooth, suffering two setbacks while rehabbing with the Portland Sea Dogs and the WooSox.
He was designated for assignment in August after the Red Sox activated shortstop Trevor Story off the injured list.
The utility infielder finished out the season with the WooSox. His season came to an ultimate end after he was placed on the injured list with a concussion.
Chang was involved in a scary collision while playing first base. He collided with Norfolk Tides’ Maverick Handley when fielding a throw from Bobby Dalbec.
It’s unclear if Chang will earn another opportunity with a major league club, he will likely sign a minor league pact this winter. Despite electing for free agency, Chang could return to the Red Sox if they are looking for a versatile infielder they can keep at Triple-A Worcester.
