Red Sox infielder elects free agency
Christian Arroyo’s time with the Red Sox organization has come to an end.
Two months after he was designated for assignment, Arroyo has elected to become a free agent, per the team’s transactions log.
In addition to Arroyo, catcher Caleb Hamilton elected to become a free agent.
Arroyo is now able to sign with any club this winter and look to earn a roster spot.
The 28-year-old spent four seasons with the Red Sox, serving as the club’s second baseman. He also played all over the infield and some right field.
Arroyo played 224 games for the Sox and struggled at the plate this season. He hit just .241 with three homers and a .638 OPS in 66 games before he was designated for assignment.
The infielder made $2 million last season spending time with both Boston and Triple-A Worcester. Arroyo struggled with the WooSox posting a .138 average and .380 OPS in 71 plate appearances. In mid-September, he was placed on the injured list with ankle inflammation ending his season.
The Red Sox will have a need a second base next season. They have interval options with Pablo Reyes, Enmanuel Valdez, Luis Urías and David Hamilton.
