Red Sox' Garrett Crochet hasn't given 'a lot of thought' on potential extension; focused on getting ready for spring training
The Red Sox landed a frontline starting pitcher in left-hander Garrett Crochet after trading four prospects, including Kyle Teel and Braden Montgomery.
Crochet comes to Boston set to make around $3 million for next season and is under team control through 2026. If Boston wants to keep the lefty around for more than two seasons, they’ll need to lock him into a long-term contract extension to avoid losing him to free agency.
The Red Sox can negotiate a contract extension at any time, but just after the trade this week, Crochet isn’t worried about an extension right now.
“I really haven’t had much time to give it a lot of thought,” Crochet told reporters via Zoom on Friday. “For me, this time of year the main thing that I’m focused on is my training and getting ready for spring training. So, until I’m told otherwise, that’s going to be my main focus.”
MassLive’s Sean McAdam projects Crochet’s extension to cost Boston around $25 million to $30 million, which would coincide with the Max Fried eight-year, $218 million deal he signed with the Yankees during the Winter Meetings.
Crochet’s potential extension could come around spring training, similar to when Boston extended Ceddanne Rafaela and Brayan Bello in recent years. The 6-foot-4, 245-pounder is just focused on pitching in front of the fans at Fenway Park.
“I think that the opportunity to play for the market of Boston, the fan base that’s representing the Red Sox, it’s about as great an opportunity as you can come by in this game,” said Crochet.
