Red Sox free agent pitching target training and throwing at Boston College
Free agent left-hander Jordan Montgomery will be spending the winter in Boston. He will be calling the city home while his wife, begins her dermatology residency at an area hospital.
Montgomery, one of the top pitching targets on the market, has been throwing and working out at Boston College, per MassLive’s Chris Cotillo.
The move to Boston doesn’t appear to be related to his free agency but strictly due to his wife’s career. It is a notable development whether the South Carolina native will like living in the city.
Boston is one of the many team’s interested in signing the southpaw. The Red Sox met with Montgomery’s representatives at the GM meetings in Arizona earlier in the month.
The lefty is coming off anchoring the Rangers rotation that just won the World Series. Montgomery posted a 3.20 ERA with a 1.19 WHIP with 166 strikeouts over 188 2/3 innings between Texas and St. Louis.
He went 4-2 with a 2.79 ERA down the stretch following the trade with the Rangers. The 6-foot-6 hurler went 3-1 in the playoffs.
Montgomery displayed his ability to be a big game pitcher during the postseason. He earned wins over the Rays and Astros in the AL Wild Card and Championship series.
The potential addition of Montgomery would begin the overhaul of the Red Sox rotation badly in need of a pitcher who can offer them innings.
