Red Sox fourth round pick Kristian Campbell 'Can't wait to get to work' following draft
The Red Sox selected a shortstop in four of their first six picks of the 2023 MLB Draft. They did however, snap their streak of taking a shortstop in the first round of the draft this year.
The four included two high school shortstops and two college shortstops. One of those college shortstops came at pick 132 out of Georgia Tech.
Kristian Campbell was a draft-eligible sophomore who just finished up a pretty spectacular season in Atlanta. Campbell played in 45 games this season and put up an impressive .376/.484/.589 slash line in 2023. He also had 4 home runs and 24 RBIs during the season.
“There are so many emotions right now with my family and me.” Campbell said to Beyond the Monster after being drafted. “I’m really excited to be a Red Sox and can’t wait get to work! I’m so very grateful for the opportunity.”
Campbell also noted that the Red Sox had been in contact with him since the beginning of last fall and during his season in Georgia Tech.
SoxProspects.com has this to say of Campbell:
“Solid contact skills provide an intriguing baseline to build on. Good athlete with a frame that suggests there is untapped power potential. Athletic enough to handle multiple positions, so if he continues to hit, has upside.”
The Georgia native joins the Red Sox other fourth round selection Justin Riemer as the only older middle infielders taken in this year’s draft class. If all goes well out of the gates in Fort Myers, a quick jump to Salem is not out of the cards.
