Red Sox sign former Giants flame-throwing reliever to minors pact
The Red Sox have signed former Giants hard-throwing right-hander Melvin Adón to a minor-league deal, per the league’s transactions log.
Adón has spent his entire career in the Giants organization and was once considered a top prospect, ranking as high as No.15 overall on MLB Pipeline (2019).
The righty offers the ability to hit 102-mph on the radar gun, but his fastball is generally in the mid-90s. Despite his ability to throw hard, his inconsistent control and injuries have caused him to spend all of his career in the minors.
Adón made 43 appearances in the minors this past season, mostly at Triple-A. He struggled on the mound, particularly with the new automated strike zone while with Sacramento. His struggles are not just exclusive to last season, the righty has had inconsistencies throughout his career.
Overall, he finished the year with 69 strikeouts, 41 walks and a 5.19 ERA over 59 frames.
In addition to offering a plus-fastball, Adón offers a slider in his pitch mix. His slider has been his best pitch, generating swing-and-misses when on the mound. If the righty can command his fastball, he could be an effective reliever for the WooSox and potentially end up in Boston.
Adón has one minor league option remaining, allowing the Red Sox to have him start the season in Chad Tracy’s bullpen in Worcester.
