Red Sox first baseman Garrett Cooper leaves game after being hit in the wrist
The Red Sox removed new first baseman Garrett Cooper from the game after he was hit in the wrist with a pitch in the bottom of the fifth inning.
During his third at-bat with the club, Cooper was drilled in the right wrist by a 94.8 mph fastball by Giants hurler Sean Hjelle.
The team announced he was removed from the game with a right wrist contusion.
Cooper was playing in his first game for the Red Sox after they acquired him in a trade from the Cubs on Saturday. He went 0-for-2 with two strikeouts over his first two plate appearances.
Boston added Cooper after he was designated for assignment by the Cubs. He will provide depth and another option to start at first base in the absence of Triston Casas who is dealing with fractured cartilage that connects his ribcage to his sternum.
Prior to coming to the Red Sox, Cooper went 10-for-37 (.270 AVG) with one homer, one double, one triple, three runs, and six RBI in 12 games with the Cubs.
