Red Sox fans got their first look at Wyatt Mills on Saturday, struck out two in one inning
When the Red Sox acquired Wyatt Mills from the Royals, he immediately garnered comparisons to current reliever John Schreiber.
The Red Sox are hopeful that the righty will have similar success to Schreiber this upcoming season.
On Saturday, Mills made his spring debut against the Braves. He threw one inning, walked one and struck out two, while earning a hold.
Mills and Schreiber have similar deliveries on the mound. He throws a four-seam fastball, slider and sinker. The 6-foot-4 reliever also plans to add a changeup to his repertoire.
Schreiber throws those same four pitches.
Mills four-seam fastball averages 91.8 mph and he held opponents to a .167 average (6-for36) in 2022.
The sidearm hurler told MassLive’s Christopher Smith, “Distinct pitches of a four-seam up and a sinker that doesn’t have as much carry on it.
“A lot more of the four-seam for lefties. And then I’ve been developing a changeup too this offseason that I’ve been working hard on. And I’m just excited to get to work, perfect that craft and hopefully add that to the arsenal.”
After a first glimpse of him on Saturday, Red Sox fans got a look as to what the club saw in the righty.
Boston acquired Mills in December from Kansas City for righty Jacob Wallace. Mills, a former third-round pick out of Gonzaga, he had a 4.60 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 27 appearances in 2022 for the Mariners and Royals.
