Red Sox designate catcher Kevin Plawecki for assignment
The 40-man roster now stands at 38 players
The Boston Red Sox have designated catcher Kevin Plawecki for assignment, per Christopher Smith and Chris Cotillo of MassLive.
The 31-year-old backup catcher struggled offensively this season. He batted .217 with a .287 on-base percentage, .287 slugging percentage, .574 OPS, one homer and eight doubles in 61 games. In addition to his offensive woes, he only threw out 9% of the runners from behind the plate, 4-of-43 this year.
During his three year stint in Boston, Plawecki hit .270 with a .333 slugging percentage, .697 OPS, five homers, 44 RBIs, 20 double, one triple over 148 games.
The club will run with Connor Wong and Reese McGuire for the rest of the regular season at catcher.
Plawecki was instrumental in the clubhouse as a leader. He also was the innovator with Jason Varitek’s help behind the home run cart in 2020.
The backstop is eligible for free agency at the end of the season. Now both catchers who were on the Opening Day roster (Christian Vazquez) are both gone from the club.
