The likes of Jose Iglesias and Elvis Andrus remain a free agent as Spring Training is set to begin in a week. Boston has been open about wanting to continue to add to their roster.
While the obvious names of Iglesias and Andrus dominate Red Sox social media, could a re-union with free agent Yu Chang make more sense on a minor league deal?
Chang was initially acquired off waivers by the Red Sox from the Rays in September. He only played in 11 games hitting .150 with one RBI with Boston. In 196 games in his career, Chang has posted a .213 average with 14 homers and 61 RBIs.
The 27-year-old offers versatility all over the infield, he played first base, second base, shortstop and third base last season.
If the Red Sox opted to sign Chang to a minor league deal, he would get an opportunity to compete for a bench spot during Spring Training.
The club’s 40-man roster has very little wiggle room at the moment. If the Red Sox signed Chang, Andrus or Iglesias, they could add one of them to the 40-man roster at the end of the spring once Story is eligible to be placed on the 60-day injured list.
The Red Sox did invite four internal infielders to Spring Training. Christian Koss, Ryan Fitzgerald, Nick Sogard and Matthew Lugo will get a chance to compete for a roster spot on the major league roster.
Chang projects as nothing more than a bench piece allowing the Red Sox some depth while Adalberto Mondesi recovers from his knee injury. There is minimal risk in adding Chang, if that is the route Chaim Bloom wants to go.
Chang is set to appear in the World Baseball Classic, he will play for Chinese Taipei.
