Red Sox claim right-handed reliever from the Angels, place Corey Kluber on 60-day IL
Prior to the start of the Red Sox and Dodgers series on Friday night, Boston added some pitching depth. The Sox claimed right-handed pitcher Zack Weiss off waivers from the Angels, the team announced.
To make room for Weiss on the 40-man roster, Corey Kluber was transferred to the 60-day injured list. Weiss was optioned to Triple-A Worcester.
The 31-year-old hurler owns a career 5.79 ERA in 19 big league relief appearances with the Reds and Angels. Weiss has bounced between the Angels and their Triple-A affiliate, primarily being used as a reliever.
The righty posted a 5.06 ERA in 5 1/3 innings in the majors and a 6.03 ERA in 37 1/3 innings in the minors. Weiss is a candidate to join the Red Sox at some point this season after offering depth to the WooSox.
Kluber has been on the injured list since June 21 with right shoulder inflammation and all indications are pointing to him not pitching again this season.
Prior to landing on the IL, Kluber struggled on the mound posting a 7.04 ERA (43 earned runs in 55 innings) and was demoted to the bullpen.
Kluber made a rehab appearance for the WooSox at the end of July, tossing two innings while allowing three earned runs off three hits, including a home run.
The former two-time Cy Young award winner signed with the Red Sox in January on a one-year, $10 million deal. Kluber’s contract has an $11 million club option for next season, which is likely to be declined. He’ll likely return to free agency during the upcoming offseason.
