Red Sox claim right-handed pitcher Logan Gillaspie, Jarren Duran moved to the 60-day IL
The Red Sox claimed right-hander Logan Gillaspie off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles, per Ian Browne of MLB.com. Boston optioned him to Triple-A Worcester. To make room for Gillaspie on the 40-man roster, the Sox placed outfielder Jarren Duran on the 60-day injured list.
Gillaspie has tossed 26 1/3 innings for the first place Orioles over the last two seasons. He pines a 4.10 ERA in 28 career appearances, including a 3.12 ERA in 17 1/3 innings last year. While in Triple-A this season, he’s tossed 36 1/3 innings and posted a 4.71 ERA.
Duran is out for the remainder of the season, following surgery on his left toe. The 26-year-old injured his left toe attempting to scale the wall at Yankee Stadium on Aug. 20 trying to rob a Gleyber Torres home run. Following the injury, Duran attempted to stay in the game but was visibly hobbling on the field.
“It was a really good year,” said Cora. “At the end, the numbers are the numbers, right? And that’s how people evaluate players. The on-base percentage, the slugging percentage, the stolen bases, got a little better defensively....He went through the ups and downs. He was hot, he struggled, then (he bounced back). He had a really good season.”
Prior to the injury, Duran was struggling at the plate in the month of August, he was hitting .192 in 17 games. Duran batted .295 with a .346 on-base percentage, .482 slugging percentage, .828 OPS, eight homers, 34 doubles, two triples, 46 runs and 40 RBIs in 102 games. He also was 24-for-26 in stolen base attempts.
