Red Sox claim pitcher off waivers from the Angels
Justin Garza has been added to the 40-man roster and optioned to Triple-A Worcester
The Red Sox claimed right-handed pitcher Justin Garza off waivers from the Angels, per the club on Friday afternoon.
Garza will now occupy the team’s last spot on the 40-man roster and has been optioned to Triple-A Worcester.
The 29-year-old was designated for assignment last week after the Halos recalled Chad Wallach and Austin Warren. Garza did not pitch for the Angels this season but has been with their Triple-A affiliate.
The righty has tossed 8 1/3 innings allowing four runs on six hits while allowing four walks.
The California native signed with the Angels in the offseason after the Guardians outrighted him off the 40-man roster. Garza made his major league debut with the Guardians last season.
He has pitched in 21 Major League games, all with Cleveland in 2021 when he posted a 4.71 ERA (15 ER/28.2 IP) with 29 strikeouts. This season, he has made six appearances with Triple-A Salt Lake, allowing four runs on six hits in 8.1 innings (4.32 ERA).
Garza will head to the WooSox and add additional right-handed pitching depth.
