Red Sox claim outfielder Jaylin Davis off waivers from the Giants
The Red Sox have claimed outfielder Jaylin Davis from the Giants on Thursday. San Francisco designated Davis for assignment last week. He will takeover a 40-man roster opening but Davis’ time with Boston maybe short lived. The Red Sox need to make room for Tanner Houck and Kutter Crawford once they’re reinstated from the restricted list.
Davis, 27, comes to the Red Sox with 26 games of major league experience. The right-handed hitting outfielder owns a career .159 average with two home runs and four RBIs in 63 at-bats. Last season, he played in five games for the Giants and had one hit in nine at-bats.
Heading into the COVID-shortened season, Davis was ranked as the No. 16 prospect in the Giants system according to Baseball America.
“The Twins took a flier on Davis in the 24th round of 2015 on the strength of what projected to be a bargain combination of power and speed,” per Baseball America.
While in the minors, Davis has struck out 27.9% of the time at the plate. He has hit 38 homers in the minors over the last three seasons. The New Red Sox outfielder has played 10 games for Triple-A Sacramento this season, batting .295 (13-for-44) with five extra-base hits, seven RBI, and three stolen bases.
