Red Sox claim left-hander off waivers from the Mariners, assign to WooSox
The Red Sox made another roster move on Sunday. Boston claimed left-handed pitcher Brennan Bernardino off waivers from the Seattle Mariners and optioned him to Triple-A Worcester.
The Red Sox moved reliever Zack Kelly to the 60-day injured list to make room for Bernardino on the 40-man roster.
The 31-year-old has made two major league appearances, both with Seattle. He allowed one earned run on three hits in 2 1/3 innings during his brief stint in the big leagues.
This season for the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers, Bernardino has pitched six innings, yielded eight runs all of them earned, 13 hits with 11 strikeouts.
Boston has only one lefty on the 26-man roster right now in Richard Bleier. The WooSox are flush with left-handed options, included Ryan Sheriff with major league experience.
Bernardino provides the Red Sox with another big league ready left-handed arm if needed.
