Red Sox CEO Sam Kennedy: ‘We’re cautiously optimistic that things are going to start moving here’
The Red Sox have yet to make a trade or sign a free agent since the offseason has begun. Boston’s CEO Sam Kennedy indicated on Wednesday that the club could be making headlines very soon.
While at the owners meetings in New York, Kennedy told the Boston Globe’s Mike Silverman that the club has been “very proactive.”

“Though I know people don’t want to hear about how aggressive we’ve been, because it doesn’t mean anything until there’s something to announce.
“But I can tell you that we’ve made offers to several players, including our own players. And we’re cautiously optimistic that things are going to start moving here,” said Kennedy.
Silverman reported that Boston has made at least two offers to Bogaerts. One offer when the season ended and once during its period of exclusivity before the All-Star filed for free agency.
“We’ve been engaged with Xander since the end of this season, and Scott Boras, his agent, and I’ll leave it at that,” said Kennedy. “But we’ve had productive conversations.”
The Red Sox are working to sign Devers to a long term deal, hoping to learn from the mistakes the team made with Mookie Betts in the process.
“We have not always been able to sign our own homegrown players long-term, I fully acknowledge that,” said Kennedy, “and when that doesn’t happen, it’s disappointing for the fans, and it’s disappointing for us on a personal level. But we get paid to make very, very difficult decisions, and we’ll see how those decisions work out.”
It’s been reported from The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal that the Red Sox would be big spenders this winter. The “interest kings” as they’ve been called the last few years have reportedly left “no stone unturned” when considering the approach to building the 2023 and beyond roster.

“It’s safe to say that Chaim [Bloom] and BOH [general manager Brian O’Halloran] are leaving no stone unturned,” he said. “They are being very diligent and aggressive in their examination of ways to improve a team at the major league level.”
