Red Sox CBO Craig Breslow addresses the importance of finding pitchers who can pitch in Boston
Craig Breslow has said the right things since he has taken over as chief baseball officer. While talking to the media at the GM Meetings in Arizona on Tuesday, the new front office leader spoke about the importance of finding pitchers who can handle playing in Boston.
“I think we need to be honest,” Breslow said to the media. “We need to be honest about what it’s like to play for the Boston Red Sox, what it’s like to win in front of some of the most passionate fans in the entire industry. And also about where we are, the steps forward we’re attending to make. But I think players are drawn to different organizations for different reasons. As a player in Boston, I can absolutely endorse how great it is to be on a winning team.”
Breslow told reporters that he’s already talked to “a good amount” of teams and agents while at the GM Meetings.
“As I talked about last week, wanting to cast as wide a net as possible in terms of adding to the team,” he said. “At this point, I think there’s only benefit to having conversations.”
Boston has reportedly already touched base with the agent for lefty Jordan Montgomery.
Over the past few years, the Red Sox never moved with the free agent market. Bloom seemed to lurk in the shadows and strike when he was ready. Breslow will need to be more aggressive if he wants to land the premium talent the roster needs.
“It falls almost exclusively on us to recognize that,” Breslow said. “We shouldn’t miss out on opportunities because we don’t have internally our information squared away or we have other priorities.”
The Red Sox will need to address the pitching coach situation quickly. Potential free agents will want to know who they’ll be working with if they want to chose to pitch in Boston.
Breslow seems to be making the most of the GM Meetings after just one day in Arizona and two weeks on the job. The Red Sox have work to do, it seems the front office is shaping up and moving in the right direction.
