Red Sox catching prospect Alex Erro makes Double-A debut
Opening play Tuesday night at Hadlock Field, the Portland Sea Dogs debuted their new backstop. Alex Erro, freshly called up from the High-A Greenville Drive, batted 7th and played catcher. The switch hitter was the corresponding move for another switch-hitting catcher in Elih Marrero, who was placed on the seven day injured list.
Relatively untested behind the plate and hitless in his three plate appearances, it was a quiet first day for Erro. A 17th-round draft pick in 2019 out of Northwestern University, Erro is a defense first backstop with a stronger hit tool than power. A player with a keen eye at the plate, Erro has a 10% walk rate this year and strong strikeout rate of just 16.6%.
Making the jump from the low minors to the high minors, it’s time to prove it for the 25 year old catcher. Having been drafted in 2019, he did lose a year of development thanks to no minor league season in 2020.
Having placed catcher Matthew Donlan on the developmental list as well, that leaves Erro as one of two catchers on the active roster. Alongside Nathan Hickey, the two will be shouldering the load at the catcher position for at least the rest of this series.
