After parting ways with veteran Kevin Plawecki, the Red Sox continued their youth movement on Saturday. With two open spots on the 40-man roster, Boston called up reliever Frank German. The former fourth-round pick has had a great year in the minors and will look to translate that success to the big leagues.
In 43 games this season, German has posted a 2.72 ERA and struck out 64 batters. While splitting time between Portland and Worcester, he limited base runners and showed excellent control. As the competition increased, he rose to the challenge.
After starting the season in Double-A, German was promoted to Worcester on May 24th. In 32 games, his ERA dropped to 2.58, and opponents hit .154 against him. The Queens native also converted seven of his eight save opportunities which is a career-high. Entering the 2022 campaign, he only had four saves on his resume.
Over the season's final weeks, German is unlikely to take on the closer's role. However, he has been one of the organization's best relief prospects this season after posting a career-high 5.12 ERA in 2021. Over the next few weeks, he will get his chance to show that he belongs in the majors.
As the Red Sox shift their focus to 2023, one area they need to improve is the bullpen. In September, they have given prospects such as Zack Kelly, Kaleb Ort, and now German a chance to showcase their stuff. The trio could play a critical role next season and will get plenty of opportunities before the season ends.
In German, the Red Sox are getting a pitcher who has ability to miss bats. Since moving to the bullpen last year, his stuff has taken off, and his arsenal includes a slider and splitter. As the regular season winds down, he will be a player to watch as the twenty-four-year-old tries to make a good first impression.
