The Red Sox are potentially looking to upgrade their depth on the bench and are connected to former Yankees infielder Gio Urshela, per MassLive’s Chris Cotillo.
Boston is one of many teams that are in on Urshela but the club has “not yet separated themselves from the pack or been the aggressor” for the veteran, Cotillo added.
The Marlins, Angels, Mets and Yankees have also been linked to Urshela, according to MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch.
If Urshela comes to the Red Sox, he will provide depth as a backup infielder offering versatility at multiple infield positions and DH. Outfielder Masataka Yoshida will see the majority of his at-bats at DH this season when he’s not in left field.
He could also serve as an upgrade over Bobby Dalbec who is in the mix to make the club, manager Alex Cora told reporters on Tuesday.
“I think versatility is coming into play. I think the outfield play we like. He (Dalbec) did a good job in Triple A. Obviously the configuration of the stadium is different in Triple A but he did a good job. And we need a right-handed bat that can play in the corners and be versatile. So he has a shot to do it.”
Urshela played in just 62 games last season after fracturing his left pelvis. Before the injury, he hit .299/.329/.374 with two home runs and he played all four infield positions for the Angles.
The 32-year-old saw the majority of his playing time at third base with the Angels. The hot corner has been considered his strongest position throughout his eight-year big league career.
