Red Sox and Cubs ‘express interest’ in former Astros right-handed reliever
Stanek could provide additional depth in the bullpen if the Red Sox trade closer Kenley Jansen ahead of spring training.
The Red Sox are looking around the free agent market to add to the bullpen ahead of spring training in February.
Boston is one of the “big-market teams” that have expressed interest in former Astros reliever Ryne Stank, according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale. The Chicago Cubs are another club that is also interested in adding the righty.
The bullpen was one of the strengths for the club last season. New chief baseball officer Craig Breslow is looking to make new additions to further strengthen the later innings for the Red Sox.
The 32-year-old posted a 4.09 ERA and 4.60 FIP in 50 2/3 innings pitched last season. Those numbers were down from an impressive 2022 season where the veteran helped the Astros win the World Series.
During the Astros championship season, the right-handed hurler finished with 1.15 ERA, 3.02 FIP while striking out 61 and holding opponents to a .188 batting average over 54 2/3 innings.
The potential signing of Stanek could provide the club protection in the bullpen if they elect to trade closer Kenley Jansen.
The veteran closer has been a candidate to be traded ahead of the season. Jansen is owed $16 million for 2024, Boston would presumably use that in other areas on the roster.
Boston is still in the mix for Scott Boras’ client Jordan Montgomery. The frugal Sox have reduced spending two straight seasons and haven’t been as active in free agency. The club has only signed right-handers Lucas Giolito and Cooper Criswell to major league pacts.
