The Red Sox have added a World Series champion with six weeks remaining in the regular season.
First basemen Nathaniel Lowe agreed to a prorated veteran minimum deal with Boston after being DFA’d by the Washington Nationals on Aug. 14. The Nationals remain on the hook for the rest of Lowe’s 10.3 million salary for 2025.
Lowe struggled this season with Washington, batting just .216 with an OPS of .665 in 119 games. He did hit 16 home runs and drove in 68 runs. Lowe came in to pinch hit in the ninth inning in last night’s 6-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles, drawing a seven-pitch walk.
This deal brings him back to the division in which he began his career. He spent the 2019 and 2020 seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays before being traded to the Texas Rangers.
As a member of the Rangers, he won a Silver Slugger as well as a Gold Glove and served as the team's starting first baseman during their 2023 championship season. The best season of his career came in 2022 when he batted .302 with 27 home runs and 76 RBIs.
Abraham Toro has struggled mightily as of late, batting just .152 in the month of August. If Lowe can cut down on his career-high 26.5% strikeout rate he posted as a member of the Nationals, he will at the very least have a chance to be a part of a first base platoon.
The Red Sox wrap up a two-game set against the Orioles tonight at Fenway Park. First pitch is set for 7:10.
