The Red Sox have announced that they have signed Utility Infielder Yu Chang. The deal is for one year at $850K, per Chris Cotillo of Mass Live.
This moves comes after placing shortstop Trevor Story on injured list following elbow surgery.
Chang is a familiar face as he was brought in last year after claiming him on waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays.
On November 8th, Chang elected free agency but did not find any other team.
Chang will provide middle infield depth backing up Enrique Hernandez and Christian Arroyo. Offensively he provides very little as he is a .213 career hitter, but value is in his versatility. He plays first, third, and second baseman.
The Red Sox are still lacking infield depth after Story got hurt. This might also get resolved internally as Cora said yesterday that Bobby Dalbec would be getting reps this spring in Fort Myers.
At this point the Red Sox 40-man roster looks to be set. However, with space left before hitting the luxury tax threshold and how Chaim Bloom is always looking to make changes, you never quite know.
