Red Sox add four players in minor league portion of Rule 5 Draft
As the Red Sox continued to reshape their roster earlier this week they were busy in the minor league portion of the Rule 5 Draft. Their haul included pitchers Hobie Harris, Darvin Garcia, Manuel Medina, and Jack Anderson. While the talented group has question marks, they add intriguing depth to the farm system.Â
Of the four, Anderson is coming off the most productive season. During the 2024 campaign, the Tampa native posted a 3.66 ERA between two levels. He also struck out 60 batters, the second-highest total of his career. While he struggled towards the end of the year after the Tigers promoted him to Triple-A, the former 16th-round pick showed some promise. He could be a solid bullpen piece in Worcester if he can limit hard contact.Â
Like Anderson, Harris has some Triple-A experience. In 44 games for the St. Paul Saints during the 2024 season, Harris posted a 6.79 ERA and struck out 62 batters. The 31-year-old struggled to limit hard contact and walked a career-high 31 batters. However, Harris did get some chances in high-leverage situations and converted five of his eight save opportunities. His time in the Twins organization came to an end in early November. He then signed with the Mets shortly after.
The Red Sox continued to stock up on bullpen pieces with Garcia, who spent most of the 2024 campaign with the Pirates' High-A affiliate. In 31 games, he posted a 4.50 ERA and held opponents to a .255 batting average. He ended the season in Double-A, making one appearance for Altoona.Â
Rounding out the list is Medina, who was with the Marlins. Since making his professional debut during the 2019 campaign, he posted a 2.32 ERA in 73 games. He also struck out 182 batters in 124 innings and finished the 2024 campaign in Low-A. Due to his success in the Marlins system, Medina should be a prospect to watch.Â
Following a busy Winter Meetings and Rule 5 Draft, the Red Sox focus is now on improving the big league roster and making a deep playoff run.Â
