Red Sox add depth outfielder to the mix to a minor league deal
The Red Sox added veteran outfielder Trayce Thompson to a minor league deal, per Beyond the Monster’s and BoSox Injection’s Hunter Noll.
The 33-year-old has appeared in 369 games over the parts of seven big league seasons, playing for both the Syracuse Mets and the Iowa Cubs last season.
Thompson played in 107 games where he hit .233 with 23 homers, 19 doubles, 66 RBI, and posted a .786 OPS. He was last in the big leagues with the Dodgers and White Sox in 2023, hitting .163 with six homers and a .579 OPS in 72 games.
Thompson was picked by the White Sox in the second round of the 2009 MLB Draft out of Santa Margarita Catholic High School in Rancho Santa Margarita, California. He initially committed to UCLA to play baseball but ultimately decided to sign with the Chicago.
During the winter of 2015, Thompson was involved in a big three-team trade between the Dodgers, Reds, and White Sox. He was sent to Los Angeles, where he spent three seasons in their system. Thompson bounced around the league, signing minor league deals with various clubs.
With the addition of Thompson, he provides depth for the WooSox, with experience at playing all three outfield positions. The one area of the WooSox roster that lacked depth was in the outfield.
If Roman Anthony doesn’t break camp with the Red Sox, Worcester will have him, Nate Eaton, Corey Rosier, Phillip Sikes, Kristian Campbell (if he doesn’t make the 26-man roster), and Tyler McDonough to play the outfield. Nick Sogard is another option to see time in the outfield if he does not make the Red Sox’ big league roster.
Thompson is the brother of NBA superstar Klay Thompson, who has played 12 seasons split between the Warriors and Mavericks. He will wear No. 37 while in camp with the Red Sox.
