The Red Sox activated left-handed reliever Richard Bleier from the injured list and designated right-hander Jake Faria for assignment, according to the team.
Bleier has been out since May 22 with left shoulder inflammation.
The Sox southpaw has struggled in his first season in Boston, allowing 15 runs (13 earned) on 24 hits over 20 innings while posting a 5.85 ERA.
Bleier had made four rehab appearances split between both Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester. The lefty recorded five strikeouts over 4 2/3 scoreless innings.
Boston now has six lefties in the bullpen that features Brennan Bernardino, Joe Jacques, Chris Murphy, Joely RodrÃguez, Brandon Walter and Bleier.
Faria was recalled from the WooSox on Sunday and made his Red Sox debut against the Cubs in the series finale. He allowed four walks and five earned runs over two innings pitched.
The Sox have seven days to release, waive or trade Faria. He had already cleared waivers once this season after he was designated for assignment back in April. He was outrighed back to Worcester where he’s pitched to a 6.47 ERA with the Sox Triple-A affiliate. Faria does have the option to reject being outrighted again and can elect free agency.
