Red Sox activate Joely Rodriguez, make additional roster move
Another day and another roster move. The Boston Red Sox have activated lefty reliever Joely Rodriguez from injured list. To make room for Rodriguez they have optioned Justin Garza to Triple-A Worcester.
This is the second time Rodriguez has returned from the IL. He began the season on the IL due to an oblique injury suffered in spring training.
After a handful of appearances in May he was put back on the IL with shoulder inflammation.
The 31-year-old struggled upon his return pitching four innings in five games. During that span he allowed seven hits, eight earned runs, and six walks.
Rodriguez was one of the first signings for Boston in the offseason with the hopes to strengthen the pen.
Rodriguez joins four other lefties on the Red Sox roster. He signed for one-year, $2 million, that includes a club option for $4.25 million. The Red Sox could also buy him out for $500,000.
Given the recent success of Brennan Bernardino and Chris Murphy, if Rodriguez struggles, he could be a trade candidate at the end of July. The southpaw has struggled surrendering eight earned runs in four innings (18.00 ERA) while allowing seven hits and walking six batters.
