Red Sox activate Garrett Whitlock, option righty back to Triple-A Worcester
The Red Sox continue to make roster moves as more players begin to come off the injured list. Boston will activate right-handed pitcher Garrett Whitlock off the IL on Sunday. To clear room for Whitlock, the Sox will option righty Kyle Barraclough to Triple-A Worcester.
Whitlock has missed a ton of time on the IL this season. He’s been dealing with a bone bruise that has had him sidelined for 32 games. The righty also missed 27 games earlier this season with right elbow neuritis.
During his last rehab appearance with the WooSox, Whitlock tossed 2 1/3 scoreless frames. He allowed two hits and no walks while striking out three.
Once he rejoins the Red Sox, the expectation is Whitlock will be used as a multi-inning bulk reliever.
Whitlock has made 10 appearances (all starts) for the Sox this season, posting a 5.23 ERA and 1.32 WHIP. He has been far better in a relief role during his career, owning a 2.24 ERA in 68 career relief appearances (112 2/3 innings).
Whitlock is fine with any role, noting he just wants to pitch for the Red Sox again this season.
“Who cares? As long as I get to play, that’s all that matters,” Whitlock said after his rehab outing Wednesday at Polar Park. “As long as I can contribute, as long as I can bring something to the team, I don’t care what I do.”
Barraclough will head back to Worcester, after allowing one run in 3 1/3 innings over two outings during this brief four-game stint with Boston.
The righty has been outstanding for the WooSox posting a 7-0 record with a 2.57 ERA and 1.05 WHIP in eight outings, which includes seven starts for the WooSox. He has 28 strikeouts and 19 walks in 42 innings.
