Red Sox acquire shortstop Adalberto Mondesi from the Royals
The Red Sox made a trade on Tuesday afternoon to add additional depth to their middle infield. Boston acquired infielder Adalberto Mondesi and a player to be named later or cash for lefty reliever Josh Taylor.
The deal was first reported by Mike Rodriguez and MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.
Mondesi comes to the Red Sox after only playing 15 games last season for the Royals. The Calif. native is a former top prospect, despite his promise, he has struggled to stay on the field playing on 358 games over seven seasons.
Mondesi will make $3.405 million this season and is set to be a free agent after the season.
With Trevor Story set to miss considerable time recovering from elbow surgery, Boston needed to add depth in the infield. In addition to adding Mondesi the Red Sox are expected to announce the signing of Adam Duvall in the coming days.
Mondesi will be added to the mix of Kiké Hernández and Christian Arroyo as infield options this season. Hernández projects to be the starting shortstop while Mondesi will play all over the diamond. He should also split time with Arroyo at second base.
The speedy infielder is a strong defensive shortstop who has not yet put it together at the dish. The former Royal has hit just .244 with 38 homers, 157 RBIs and a .687 OPS since breaking into the big leagues in 2016. Mondesi’s speed is his best tool, stealing 133 bases over his seven big league seasons. He swiped 43 bags in 2019, which is a career high.
