Red Sox acquire right-handed pitcher Wyatt Mills from the Royals
The Red Sox made a minor trade on Friday, acquiring reliever Wyatt Mills from the Royals for pitching prospect Jacob Wallace.
Mills was designated for assignment by the Royals on Tuesday after the team announced the signing of free agent pitcher Ryan Yarbrough.
The 27-year-old righty joined the Royals organization last summer after being from the Mariners as part of the Carlos Santana trade.
Last season, Mills made 19 MLB appearances in Kansas City, working to a 4.79 ERA across 20 2/3 innings. Mills struck out 39.7% of the batters he faced in 13 outings for the Royals Triple-A affiliate. The former Gonzaga product has struggled with his control, he walked more than 17% of opponents he faced.
Mills who is listed at 6-foot-4 possess a sidearm delivery, similar to teammate John Schreiber. He operates with a three-pitch mix that features a four-seam fastball that hovers around the low-90s, a slider and sinker, per Baseball Savant.
The former third-round pick held opposing hitters to a .167 batting average with his four-seamer. Mills threw his four-seamer 40% of the time last season.
The Washington native owns one-minor league option and is not arbitration-eligible until 2026. Mills will offer The Red Sox bullpen depth in 2023 and possibly longer.
Wallace was acquired from the Rockies back during the COVID shortened season in a trade for outfielder Kevin Pillar.
