Red Sox acquire right-handed pitcher from Brewers for cash
On Thursday night, the Boston Red Sox added to their bullpen depth in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers. The Red Sox acquired right-handed pitcher Vladamir Gutierrez and optioned him to Worcester. With Gutierrez in the mix, Boston now has another veteran option in the minors.
Since making his MLB debut during the 2021 season, Gutierrez has appeared in 33 games for the Marlins and Reds, posting a 5.47 ERA. In his limited opportunities, the Cuban native struck out 121 batters while holding opponents to a .274 batting average. However, he has struggled with control and walked 72 batters in 154.2 innings of work.Â
While most of Gutierrez’s work has been as a starter, he has made a few appearances out of the bullpen. His ability to play multiple roles could be valuable as games pile up.Â
Although the 28-year-old was once one of the Red's top pitching prospects, his career has been full of ups and downs. During the 2022 season, Gutierrez had Tommy John Surgery and returned to the mound last September. He was then removed from Cincinnati's 40-man roster and became a free agent. In January the Marlins signed him to a minor league deal.Â
The last three weeks have been full of change for Gutierrez. He was added to the Marlins' 40-man roster and made one appearance to help a taxed bullpen. After a four-inning appearance, he was designated for assignment to clear room for a fresh arm. The Marlins were hoping he would pass through waivers, but the Brewers had other plans. In his only Triple-A start for Milwaukee before being designated for assignment, Gutierrez allowed seven runs in 4.2 innings of work.Â
With the Red Sox, Gutierrez will be looking to prove himself in Worcester and earn a promotion to the majors. Trevor Story was moved to the 60-day IL to make room for Gutierrez on the 40-man roster.Â
