Red Sox acquire recently DFA’d infielder from the New York Mets
The Red Sox have been very active on the trade market the last few days. Boston acquired infielder Zack Short from the Mets on Wednesday in exchange for cash, the team announced.
Short is out of minor league options, meaning he will need to join the 26-man roster. This is the second trade the Red Sox have made in the last 24 hours. The club acquired left-handed pitcher Bailey Horn from the White Sox on Tuesday.
Short, 28, is a native of New York with 187 major league games under his belt over the last four seasons. The Sacred Heart University alum was originally drafted by the Cubs in the 17th round back in 2016. He’s a career .172/.266/.304 hitter in the big leagues and owns a .224/.357/.400 slash in 1017 plate appearances at the Triple-A level.
The new Sox infielder is known as a sound defender, having played second base, shortstop, and third base, and has some outfield experience as an outfielder.
Boston has been looking to add higher ceiling players to the mix and upgrade over David Hamilton, Enmanuel Valdez and Bobby Dalbec. With Short’s acquisition, Hamilton becomes expendable and should be optioned to Triple-A Worcester, unless he’s designated for assignment.
Vaughn Grissom is going to be activated off the injured list in the next few days. Once he is added to the 26-man roster, Grissom replaces Valdez. Boston has been connected to free agent first baseman and outfielder Dom Smith. The veteran opted out of his deal with the Rays on Wednesday. If Boston adds Smith, a player will need to be designated for assignment, and Dalbec should be sent back to the WooSox.
