Red Sox acquire infielder Pablo Reyes from the Athletics
Reyes will report to Triple-A Worcester but could be added to the Red Sox 26-man roster
The Red Sox made a small trade on Friday afternoon acquiring infielder Pablo Reyes from the Athletics for cash considerations.
Reyes was assigned to Triple-A Worcester but could be added to the 40-man roster. The Red Sox have been reportedly in the market for a middle infielder. If Boston were to add Reyes to the roster, Bobby Dalbec is the most likely option to be sent back to the WooSox.
The 29-year-old has four years of major league experience dating back to 2018. He made his debut with the Pirates back in 2018, playing in 18 games hitting .293 with two doubles, three home runs, seven RBIs and slashing .349/.483/.832.
The Dominican native had an expanded role the following season but struggled slashing .203/.274/.322/.596 in 71 games. Ultimately, Reyes time with Pittsburgh came to an end in 2020 when he was designated for assignment hat January and the following month was served with an 80-game suspension for PEDs.
Reyes hooked on with the Brewers following his suspension, inking a minor league deal prior to the 2021 season. He would remain with that organization for two season, appearing in 58 games with Milwaukee.
The addition of Reyes will provide the Red Sox additional depth with Trevor Story, Adalberto Mondesi, Yu Chang and Christian Arroyo on the injured list.
Reyes has the ability to provide positional versatility all over the baseball diamond. He’s played second base, third base, shortstop and all three outfield positions.
