Red Sox ace pitcher Brayan Bello makes rehab start, felt 'really good'
Red Sox starting pitcher Brayan Bello made his first rehab appearance since being placed on the 15-day injured list with right lat tightness. Pitching for the AA Portland Sea Dogs, Bello finished with 2.2 innings, throwing 52 pitches (32 for strikes), including four hits, two walks, five strikeouts, and two earned runs.
On the sinker, Bello got up to 97 mph. On the season, the young starter has averaged 95.3 mph with the pitch.
“I just tried to make sure I felt good, and everything felt good,” Bello said through development coach and interperter Justin Frometa.
Bello was able to achieve 10 first-pitch strikes to 15 of the batters he faced, a strategy of emphasis by pitching coach Andrew Bailey.
Bello signed a six-year extension worth $55 million during spring training, cementing him as the ace of the staff. In five starts before going onto the injured list, he had pitched 26.2 innings across five starts, sporting a 3.05 ERA and 1.05 WHIP.
This rehab start for Bello was one of his first appearances back at Hadlock since throwing a no-hitter in a seven inning double header game in 2022.
“It’s like coming back home,” Bello said. “I feel like my best year in the minor leagues was my time here in Portland. It’s great to see the fans again and be back here at Hadlock Field.
Bello says his next start will be back in the major leagues, at Fenway Park on Sunday against the Washington Nationals.
